Alex Nees
is a children‘s book illustrator and author.
She was born in Germany, to a German mother and Choctaw father. Most of her early childhood was spent in the US, before she moved back to Germany permanently with her mother. Feeling out of place, picture books became a refuge for Alex, a place where she felt recognized and connected to the world.
Alex studied American literature and art history in Germany and the UK, following her love for storytelling and art. While at university, she rediscovered her passion for picture books and taught herself to illustrate and write for children.
Alex lives in Aabenraa, a picturesque sea-side town in the south of Denmark, with her 11-year-old daughter.
“At its heart, my work is driven by storytelling, whether I am illustrating or writing. I find that picture books have a special kind of magic to them, making them both delightful and profound. Remembering what they meant to me as a child, creating books now feels like an incredible honor, and a great joy.“
